Davidoff
Edition Limitée 2022
El Dorado
Today I take you
to Discovery, you don't have to turn on your TV, I'm not talking about
Discovery Channel but about the renowned Davidoff family range.
While the fusion
of atoms is on everyone's lips: the dismantling of power plants, threats from a
man who has nothing to do with Quebec's culinary specialty... Davidoff invites
us to step out of time and the concept of necessity for a moment to reach an
oasis of calm, an El Dorado.
This little
corner of paradise where the fusion of 3 elements takes place: water, fire and
earth. Fusion? I would rather say symbolic meeting, symbiosis between them.... It
is in this place that the magicians practiced magic and brought from the bowels
of Mother Earth a Gran Toro cigar that combines the sweetness of Escurio, the
intensity of Nicaragua and the complexity of Yamasá.
This seems like a
very good omen for the rest of the tasting.
I have a rather
dark cape, richly decorated with two black and silver rings, the first from the
head reminds us that we are in Black Band
Collection Discovery (usually the rings are white at Davidoff)
The other is
marked Limited Edition 2022. This blend makes my tasting of the day look like a
jewel, and for that reason alone I think it has done its magic.
Another moment of contemplation and I make a straight cut, raw I already have sensations of cedar and coffee.
The lighting is
perfect, a good stream of smoke fills my mouth and transports me from the first
puffs. I have escaped to Quebec and its hunting camps in the boreal forest, the
hides are drying and the air is filled with the smell of wild leather to which
are added the scents of the greasy and spongy earth.
All this is
accompanied by a mild white pepper.
Slowly I move up
a gear and imagine the white and black pepper entwined in perfect harmony around
my caduceus of the day to let the magic do its work and release streams of
cedar, oak, walnut and strong coffee.
Wow, what
fireworks, my cigar is brimming with flavor yet balanced. It's as if Cerberus
was pulling his chain when Hercules arrived, but it holds the power of my
vitola to the point of detonation.
It's like when
you say "I have a lot of power"
but you have to drive 120 kph.
I pause for a
moment to note that the ash is compact, that it looks like it is riveted to the
rest of my Davidoff. The draw and burn are perfect. A small sip of my tea, wine
or water (depending on the tasting) and I continue my discovery of this gem. I
want to digress for a moment, because I know the combination will interest you,
the technical sheet recommends tasting with a multi-origin rum, such as a Compagnie des Indes Kaiman or a Plantation Multi Island from the house
of Demiautte.
Just when I feel
that the dark chocolate is going to derail the dance, I voluntarily crack my
square of dark chocolate with almonds and salt from Guérande, the combination
is just right and perfect. It doesn't take much more than that to have me
enchanted and conquered by the gamble of the Masters Blenders, yes they have
brought together water, fire and earth.
My tasting ends slowly and not quickly in a forest of
cedar, tanned leather this time and rather bitter dark chocolate.
But since
everything has an end, I must leave my cigarette butt in the ashtray. Another
one that will return as an offering to good old Mother Earth, with certainly a
thought for the entire production, distribution and sales chain that worked so
hard so that I could spend a moment of great magic in my living room with
Renaud's new record.
The tests of this
new Davidoff cigar were conducted on 5 copies of this Gran Toro measuring 13.97
cm for a cepo of 58
Wapper : Ecuador

20-20 Seco (Dominican Republic), San Vicente Mejorado Visus (Dominican Republic),

In summary, this
is a sensational Limited Edition that, with these 7 leaves, allows us to
discover another aspect of the black ring range. The next exercise will be to
discover when I am in the Nicaragua, or in the Escurio or in the Yamasa or I
recommend you to let yourself be rocked slowly by your tasting that will not
fail to bring you new taste sensations.
Like all E.L.'s,
there is only one number of cigars planned for the world and here it is set at
162000 or 13500 boxes of 12 cigars.
I think your
favorite retailer has a good deal, but don't be Alice's white rabbit, because
when the final bell rings, it's too late.
Price at time of
tasting: 25 euros
