Davidoff's
New Dominican Treasure: A Prolonged Wait for Belgium
After
a monumental effort, the Master Blenders of Maison Davidoff are celebrating the
global launch of a true gem: a 100% Dominican cigar, named Puro Dominicano.
However, this "global" launch comes with a notable exception. A small
country is still resisting the distribution of this newcomer to the Black
Band range.
This
time, strikes are not to blame; the culprit is none other than the indomitable
"Captain No-Smoke" and the strict implementation of plain packaging.
So, my Belgian friends, you will need to exercise a little more patience before
you can savor it.
The
Dominican Republic: Between Land and History
While
the Dominican Republic is renowned for its paradise beaches, its gold, or even
its medical equipment production, two resources remain absolutely unique: its
tobacco and its amber. Both born from Mother Earth, they are considered
irreplaceable.
Although
amber can be found all across the globe, the variety from the famous Barahona
region is the most coveted. Beyond its radiant beauty, Dominican amber is much
more than a precious stone: it is a fossilized jewel, a precious witness
linking us to our planet's distant past.
The
Excellence of a Terroir
Tobacco
follows the exact same logic of excellence. Granted, large farms and
prestigious factories exist in Nicaragua, Cuba, or Honduras, but Dominican
tobacco possesses a singular identity. It stands out for its remarkable balance
and a tasting experience often described as "creamy" and elegant.
Thanks
to the exceptional diversity of its soils, it offers a wider aromatic palette
than its neighbors, confirming its distinct status in the cigar world.
Heritage
in Motion: From Nicaragua to the Puro Dominicano
The
Master Blenders of Maison Davidoff needed to solidify the path forged in 2013
with the launch of the first cigar in the Black Band range. At that
time, they respectfully followed in the footsteps of their predecessors, who
were themselves driven by the pioneering vision of Zino Davidoff. He was the
first to prove to the world that excellence was not confined within Cuba's
borders, paving the way for the spectacular rise of Dominican terroirs.
Since
that initial momentum, the Escurio and Yamasá lines have enriched
the Nicaraguan heritage, exploring ever-bolder aromatic profiles. In this
spring of 2026, this quest for perfection reaches a new milestone: the Puro
Dominicano range crowns an already exceptional lineage.
From
Earth to Jewel: The Amber Analogy
The
soil of the Dominican Republic can be unforgiving. Yet, from this earth emerges
a rare treasure: Dominican amber. For anyone captivated by its warmth and
brilliance, a new depth reveals itself. The same goes for the other jewel born
from this terroir: the Davidoff Puro Dominicano.
No
other region could have breathed such life into this masterpiece, which is
simultaneously complex and pure. A unique climate, multiple facets, and six
exceptional terroirs constitute the secret behind this new pillar of the range.
But excellence doesn’t stop there: crafting this "100% puro" relies
on tobaccos with a combined age reaching 32 years.
Much
like amber, extracted under extreme conditions at depths of over 100 meters,
tobacco is a raw gem. While the stone becomes a magnificent piece of jewelry in
the hands of a jeweler, tobacco ascends to a status of exception under the
fingers of Master Blenders and torcedores. This cigar is a work of art
to be respected and savored under the best possible conditions.
Summary
Each
terroir brings its own character to an aromatic profile deeply rooted in
Dominican soil. Only Davidoff's craftsmanship manages to transform meticulously
cultivated tobaccos into a pure masterpiece of pleasure.
This
is why the vitola features a second amber-yellow band, a vibrant tribute to
craftsmanship and tradition.
The
Tasting Ritual
While
Dominican miners, like the dwarves of Moria, delve into the depths to extract
the fossilized resin, I am preparing to discover my first vitola. My tastings
for this article will focus on two formats: the Corona Larga and the Perfecto.
- The Corona Larga: Sporting a ring gauge (cepo) of 44, it pays tribute to the year 1844,
the date of Dominican independence.
- The Perfecto: A unique figurado format, which currently does not feature in
any other line of the Davidoff catalog.
I
begin with the Perfecto. After a tribute to Freya, guardian of our Skalnid, I
make a straight cut. As the formidable "Are You Ready?" (from
WrestleMania 42) echoes, I flick open my Davidoff Winston Churchill lighter and
gently toast the foot of my cigar.
What
I admire about this format is the construction of the ash: during this tasting,
it proves to be compact, forming a perfect nose cone (ogive) at the tip
of the cigar.
The
smoke shows up generously right from the start, carrying flavors of dark
chocolate, freshly tanned leather, and cedar. The opening is thoroughly smooth
and rounded, before brown sugar and brioche bread take over.
I
continue the tasting calmly, as the vitola feels quite loaded with nicotine.
I
then arrive at the heart of the matter with an intense aromatic palette: notes
of almonds, salted peanuts, a barely perceptible hint of vanilla, and a noble
woodiness reminiscent of oak. Its global release seems perfectly timed, given
the spring-like floral flavors it exudes.
Just
before removing the band, I find myself facing a literal "wall of
smoke," a sensation amplified by the characteristic shape of this module's
head. I feel like a cyclist at the foot of the Mur de Huy during the Flèche
Wallonne (a little nod to a dear friend).
After
a quick rinse of the mouth with water, I continue the ascent toward the summit
of this extraordinary tasting. I am now navigating through a cloud of black
pepper. Farewell earth and peat: in the final sprint, hints of amaretto emerge,
blended with saline notes that already carry me away to my next vacation in
Morbihan.
Damn,
this is good! To avoid burning my fingers, I grab my cigar pick to draw the
final puffs of this jewel that has completely won me over.
Technical
Specifications
The
tests were carried out on four samples: two Corona Larga and two Perfecto.
- Corona Larga: 14.9 cm | Ring Gauge 44
- Perfecto: 15.2 cm | Ring Gauge 50
- (Maison Davidoff also
markets it in a Short Robusto format: 11.5 cm | Ring Gauge 52)
- Wrapper (Cape): Yamasá
- Binder (Sous-cape): Martín Garcia
- Filler (Tripe): Villa González, Mao, Piloto (terroir), Navarrete & Yamasá
Conclusion
While
the Short Robusto is presented as a rapid flavor progression—ideal for a punchy
experience—I found that the Corona Larga developed with an elegant slowness.
The Perfecto, on the other hand, offers a fascinating transition between
initial sweetness and a true wall of power.
Davidoff's
strategy with this black band is to maintain reasonable prices to allow as many
aficionados as possible to discover the vitolas in the range.
Prices
(in Luxembourg) at the time of writing:
- Short Robusto: €19.60
- Corona Larga: €23.00
- Perfecto: €24.90
